Sheffield Castle's big dig: The people's castle
Ever wondered what it feels like to dig up a castle?
We gave our community dig participants, Emily, Roy and Matthew, a break from excavating medieval features and asked them about their experiences on the site of Sheffield Castle.
Here they reveal what it’s been like excavating the birthplace of Sheffield

Only a few minutes? Way too short! Can we get a few hours next time?❤
Great presentation. would love to see more finds from the moat.
I'm no expert by any means, but is it possible he was bell beaker the metal working tools, archery the arrowheads themselves and his place of orgin in the alps
Who else remembers the TT episode of Phil's DNA test? He is descended from a female who crossed into England from Europe 20,000 years ago. He may be descended from the people he is bringing to life here.
What might the iron be from? When else has vivianite been present? Why might there have been a tree in the moat? Was it worked? De-barked? Less musical interludes and backhoes, more story, please!
Interesting. I hope that there will be a more extensive presentation of the dig. I know that it isn't Time Team, but since I live in the Rocky Mountains, in the US, I will never get a chance to go see the castle in person.
Cheers.
Thank you.
why so short ? be good to see a proper full report of the dig, short is shite
“Black Tenacious Sludge” sounds like a great name for a band!
These are always too short. We want more! ❤
I scrolled down 53 comments before I found one that didn't mention Phil, I didn't count beyond that but it appeared to be Phils all the way down. Legend.
love this guy, makes me feel like i'm home whenever i see him on tv. Vindercated
Kudos for recycling 👏
They were travellers. Orkney pottery found in the Stonehenge area. Maybe travel was safe? They used cup and cup and ring mark symbols from Northern Scotland to Portugal and beyond. There was an Atlantic seaboard pan-European culture that shared a lot culturally.
The stone circle reminds me of a roman colosseum or arena. 10 meter deep ditch, and huge rampart to sit on for the audience.
If I wanted to hear music, I would go to a concert.

Hi Folks, So very glad to see Wessex Archaeology through several youtube videos, and love to see the very best Dr Phil there ever was by far, As much as I enjoy these videos, and I really do, I would like to ask that in editing your content you would back-off the background music please? it is >>very<< irritating to have it compete with and far too often outcompete, the voices of those talking and what they are saying, Looking forward to more great Archaeology content, discussions, etc...., Thank you, KWL
Is this for sale for Meta Quest users ?
I remember the first time I saw Stonehenge. It was the night before Midsummer. I was hitchhiking from London and was dropped off on Salisbury plain, probably a mile and a half from the monument. The moon was pretty bright and I walked the distance, soon I could see Stonehenge on the horizon and, as I walked, it grew larger and larger. It seemed to just arise from the earth. It was literally overwhelming. Of course, by dawn it was pouring rain and I never got to see the sun rising over the healstone.
I wish they made replicas that could be purchased. I'd but one in a minute!!!
If you dig a trench, you're darn sure gon' have to Phil it !!!
That looks very satisfying imo lol
Thankyou for this amazing video I hope Phil Harding will be giving us more wonderful information The one person who makes the past the present ❤😊
Odd music choice ..
Keep the drums!
Thank you.
Thank you.
Annoying clapping music
Thanks for the heads up, WA.
Put a trench in. Get some shoring.
Could listen to Phil all day long... what a lovely man.
When I was at junior school in the mid 60’s, we had items loaned to us, we studied the story of cocoa, sheep’s wool and the weaving trade, and the moon lander. We were also taught about the slave trade too.
I agree, all artefacts should stay with person they were buried with, anything else is pure grave robbing.
Brian Jones and Mick Taylor were the best years.
Soft skillls are more important than scientific/ technology.
Awesome.. thanks for preserve the sacred legacy of our ancestors..!
Is this for sale in meta quest?
Wow Phil you're incredible
Phil Harding I didn't know the words as I child but you a real calming quality to yourself whilst been able to deliver information/facts on amazing history
I think if people from half million years ago were looking over your shoulder, some probably would think you were less skilled than they were, if not "totally incompetent". Others would probably think "I wish I could do it that well, but I bet I can run faster than him." We're all different and I bet we always were.
What is in the box? Looks like a cylinder to me 😞, continuing since that has been addressed; 3D print cast into bronze and the sound released is of replica not the original 🥉 hmmm 🧐
Bucket list just keeps growing...
Wow !
I'm recovering from a BKA, right foot amputation, after freak accident.. I have always followed time team , and it's a crying shame that the BBC will not fund these guys on an incredible journey to unearth the past. Phil I recall , in one episode , ensured that whilst handling a burial ground , he was adamant not to be disrespectful to the dead... I'm intending to work on a pre history round fort on our land . It keeps me going and I'm determined to walk again .
LOL. I realized my mistake just a little way in; I thought this was about the Flintstones!
Inspiration right there, bet there’s no black mold in it
Amazing ending to a great beginning! Phil is the best TV presenter out there. You can't help but like the bloke 👍
